Why higher isn't always better

Two things break the "higher TC = better" assumption. First, inflation: Wikipedia warns that "inflated thread counts are usually the result of including the number of strands in a twisted yarn in the claimed thread count" — so a two-ply yarn gets counted twice, and a genuine 300 becomes a headline 600. Second, diminishing returns: beyond roughly 400, added thread count brings negligible real quality gain and is largely a marketing figure. A finer yarn count and a clean, balanced density tell you far more than a big TC number.
